Director Bertrand Blier dies

The great French director Bertrand Blier, who had an invaluable influence on world cinema, has died at the age of 85. Among his cult works are "Cold Turkey", "The Evening Dress", "Waltz" and many others.

According to France 24, citing Blier's son, the director passed away in his home, surrounded by his family — his wife and children.

French Culture Minister Rachida Dati expressed deep sorrow over the loss, noting: "Бертран Блие был гениальным мастером диалога, продолжателем традиций Превера и Одиара. Его фильмы, вне времени и границ, подарили знаковые роли таким выдающимся актерам, как Жан-Пьер Марьель, Жерар Депардье, Миу-Миу, Мишель Блан, Изабель Юппер, Патрик Девара и Жозиан Баласко. Бертран был великой личностью и страстным защитником творческой свободы." (Bertrand Blier was a genius of dialogue, a continuation of the traditions of Prévost and Odiard. His films, timeless and borderless, gave iconic roles to outstanding actors such as Jean-Pierre Marielle, Gérard Depardieu, Miou-Miou, Michel Blanc, Isabelle Huppert, Patrick Dewaere, and Josiane Balasko. Bertrand was a great personality and a passionate defender of creative freedom.)

Born on 14 March 1939 in the Parisian suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt, the director showed an interest in cinema from an early age and soon became known for his unique, non-conformist approach to directing and the coverage of unconventional topics.

His career began to develop rapidly with his 1963 debut film "Hitler? I Don't Know Such a Man". However, Blier truly gained popularity in 1974, when his film "Waltz" caused a real sensation. 

This work became an important moment both for the director and for his cast, including Gérard Depardieu, Patrick Dewaere, and Miou-Miou. Known for his sharp humour, Blier managed to create a truly revolutionary film of its time.

In 1979, he received his first "Oscar" for the film "Prepare Your Handkerchiefs". His film "Too Beautiful for You" was awarded the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and three French "César" awards.
